The Historic Brown Ranch was originally a family-owned working cattle ranch pioneered in the late 1800's. On the corner of Highway 62 and X48 (formerly Carstens Ranch Road) you will see an historic log cabin still in use today. Above the cabin are the remnants of Telluride's famous railroad, which transported gold ore and passengers from Telluride to Durango and Silverton. The railway ran along the eastern boundary of Brown Ranch and a dusty stagecoach trail cut through the property in the other direction.
The current Brown Ranch is composed of secluded home sites, 100-foot ponderosa pines and substantial groves of mature aspens. There are views of Sneffels Peaks, North Pole, Grayhead Mountain, Lizard Head, the Wilson Range, Dolores and El Diente peaks, Little Cone, Lone Cone, the Cimarrons, and to the west, the Blues and LaSals in Utah.
Located atop Iron Springs Mesa in San Miguel County, 21 miles from Telluride. Bown Ranch is home to herds of elk, deer and an abundance of other wildlife such as wild turkey, foxes, coyotes, and the occasional bear.
The original 22 parcels were developed by Bill Carstens of Billorado Corp., but annexations have resulted in a total of 55 memberships in the Brown Ranch Road Maintenance Association (BRRMA). Properties range from 35 acres to over 1,000 acres, with all properties except those in Brown Dog Ranch being 75 acres or more. The first property in Brown Ranch was purchased in September of 1994. The latest annexation in 2007 included 15 parcels in Brown Dog Ranch. The BRRMA now includes the following subdivisions: Amphitheatre Ranch, Brown Ranch East, Brown Ranch West, Brown Ranch Estates, Brown Ranch North, The Frontier, New Carradine Properties, and Brown Dog Ranch.
